Visual Arts

At Creekside K-9 College, students experience Visual Art from Prep to Year 9. Students explore their creativity and imagination through the creation of 2D and 3D artworks using a range of tools, materials and techniques. Over the course of the year students develop visual arts language and concepts by exploring artists and art styles by utilising hands on skills and art theory approaches.

Prep

Students start to become aware of whom artists are and learn to utilise a variety of mediums and tools to create their own artworks. They explore ideas and use their own experiences, observations and imaginations to create visual artworks of their own. Over the course of the year, students will be learning the basics of using techniques and tools, creating accurate portraits and studying the difference between 2D and 3D art forms.

Year 1 & 2

Students develop their awareness of how artists can express their ideas through different art forms. They experiment with new materials and techniques to create interesting artworks and expand their ideas about combining their own imagination and creativity with new art concepts and theories. Over the course of the year, students will be learning how to expand on previously learnt techniques such as manipulating watercolour to create different effects, utilising colour theory to create artworks with themes and building drawing and sketching techniques.

Year 3 & 4

Students explore how and why artists realise their ideas through different art forms. They observe the world around them and express these observations through different practical applications of art making. Through imaginative, hands-on investigations students become more knowledgeable about their practices as an artist. Students also begin to focus on how we can explore and respond to artworks using the elements of art and utilising art language. Over the course of the year, students will draw on aboriginal and worldwide cultures to inspire their own artworks, expand on their ceramics skills by creating detailed 3D artworks and start learning basic textile skills.

Years 5 & 6

Students in year 5 and 6 further develop their knowledge of artists, art movements, and reflect this learning in individual creative projects relating to areas of study such as Pop Art and Cubism. They learn to analyse artworks with the appropriate art elements and interpret their meanings. They build on techniques learnt and refine their skills in drawing, painting, printmaking and 3D construction.

Year 7

In year 7 there is a focus on skill development and creative thinking. Students apply learnt techniques to their own designs, where they are supported in problem solving and technique refinement to achieve their desired end result. Students work with a range of mediums and processes including ceramics, printmaking, drawing and painting. Art theory takes a stronger focus in year 7, with students learning how to identify, analyse and evaluate how artists uses materials, techniques, processes and visual conventions to express ideas and meanings.

In the Visual Communication unit students learn how to create visual messages and experiences that communicate information and ideas across many media. Students learn to be the designer by transforming their creative ideas into professional looking designs. By developing their own unique strengths and creative style, students learn to create impressive folios both paper based and digital. The portfolios showcase a range of skills such as 2D and 3D drawings using 1 and 2 point perspective, logo and web design.

Year 9 – Elective Subjects

The Artist

In The Artist elective students have the opportunity to explore a range of drawing and painting mediums, tools and techniques to pursue their own individual projects. They develop and use arts language to analyses artworks from a range of cultures and periods in history both verbally and in written form.

Ceramics

In the Ceramics elective students have the opportunity to explore the planning, creation and decoration of ceramics pieces. They learn about art appreciation and be expected to analyse the work of others as well as their own creations.
